EXION® RF MICRONEEDLING · AFTERCARE
Give your skin
room to recover.
For the first 3–5 days, keep your routine simple: gentle cleansing, a comfortable moisturizer, and sun protection. Pause products that can sting or exfoliate. Your skin’s response is individual, so follow the specific instructions your provider gave you.

THE FIRST WEEK
What to do, and when.
Treatment dayKeep hands and products off
Use only the post-treatment product(s) your provider specifically approved. Avoid touching, rubbing or picking at the treated skin. Follow your provider’s directions about when to wash; when cleared, use lukewarm water and clean fingertips, then pat dry with a clean towel.
First 24–48 hoursBe gentle with heat and makeup
Skip makeup on the treated area for at least 24–48 hours and until the skin feels comfortable and has no open or pinpoint-oozing areas. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy sweating, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and swimming for 48–72 hours. Heat and sweat can increase flushing and discomfort while skin is sensitive; pools and hot tubs also expose freshly treated skin to shared water. Choose a lukewarm shower, not a hot one.
Days 1–7Cleanse, moisturize, protect
Once your provider says cleansing is appropriate, wash gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Apply a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher once your provider says sunscreen is appropriate and your skin tolerates it; SPF 50 is a good target. Favor shade and a hat while skin is sensitive.
Around day 7+Reintroduce actives slowly
Wait at least 7 days before restarting retinoids or exfoliating products, and wait longer if you still have redness, tenderness, flaking, stinging or open spots. Restart one product at a time. Ask your prescriber before restarting prescription skin medications.
Timelines are general guidance. Deeper or more intensive treatments and individual healing can require a longer pause.
READ THE LABEL
Choose calm.
Pause the actives.
Ingredient names can help, but the whole formula matters. A product marketed as “gentle” may still contain an exfoliant, fragrance or another ingredient that irritates freshly treated skin.
HOLD FOR ABOUT 7 DAYS
Ingredients and products to pause
- Retinoids: retinol, retinal/retinaldehyde, adapalene, tretinoin and other vitamin A products.
- Exfoliating acids: glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic and other AHA/BHA/PHA acids.
- Other potentially irritating actives: benzoyl peroxide and strong low-pH vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid).
- Physical exfoliation: scrubs, cleansing brushes, exfoliating pads and at-home peels.
- Potential irritants: fragranced products, essential oils or products that burn or sting.

Ingredients that can support comfort
- Glycerin and hyaluronic acid to attract and hold water.
- Ceramides and squalane to help support the skin barrier.
- Colloidal oatmeal or dimethicone in a moisturizer if your skin tolerates them.
- A fragrance-free, non-exfoliating moisturizer made for sensitive skin.
- A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. SPF 50 is recommended; a mineral formula with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide may feel more comfortable on sensitive skin.
OUR SKINCEUTICALS PICK
Advanced
RGN-6.
A restorative cream for daily skin care and a considered option in your post-treatment routine.
Advanced RGN-6 is a fragrance-free cream formulated with six featured ingredients: Glyco-Repair™, eperuline, niacinamide, ectoin, acetyl tetrapeptide-9 and a bioceramide. These ingredients are selected to support hydration, skin comfort and the look of a more even, smoother complexion. It can also be used as part of a regular skincare routine—not only after a procedure.
What the evidence supportsSkinCeuticals describes RGN-6 as suitable for daily and post-procedure use and reports physician testing alongside in-office laser procedures. A 2025 real-world case series described six selected patient cases using it with different procedures; it was not a controlled trial of EXION RF microneedling. It has not been shown to speed healing or prevent complications after EXION. Think of it as an optional supportive cream, not a medical treatment or a guarantee.
Wait to apply it until your provider says topical products are appropriate. If it stings or your skin reacts, rinse it off and contact us. It can also be used as part of a regular routine once your skin is back to baseline.

A GENTLE ROUTINE
Keep the steps simple.
01Cleanse
Choose a mild, non-exfoliating, fragrance-free cleanser. We carry SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser. Other gentle cleansers can work too—look for a simple formula and avoid scrubs, acids and cleansing brushes.
02Moisturize
Choose a plain moisturizer for sensitive skin with hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides or dimethicone. Advanced RGN-6 is our featured SkinCeuticals option; a simple fragrance-free moisturizer is also appropriate if you prefer.
03Protect
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher once your provider says sunscreen is appropriate and your skin tolerates it; SPF 50 is a good target. We carry SkinCeuticals Clear Daily Soothing UV Defense SPF 50 and Future Mineral UV Defense SPF 50. Reapply as directed, and use shade and a hat.
A FEW CLEAN HABITS
Keep contact gentle and clean.
- Wash your hands before touching your face or applying a product. Try to keep your hands off the treated area, and do not pick, rub or scratch it.
- Use a clean towel and clean pillowcase. Change your pillowcase the night after treatment, and keep bedding and anything touching your face fresh.
- Keep makeup tools, phone screens and hats clean. Avoid sharing face towels or makeup, and skip facial tools until your skin has settled.
WHAT CAN BE NORMAL
Mild effects can happen.
Some redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, tightness, dryness or itching can occur and should gradually improve. Mild flaking or a rough feel may also appear as skin settles.
For temporary discomfort
- Use a clean, cool damp cloth briefly; do not put ice directly on the skin.
- Keep the area clean and moisturized with products your provider approved.
- Do not scratch, scrub, peel or pick at flaking skin.
- Protect from direct sun and avoid heat while the area is sensitive.
Contact us promptly if symptoms worsen
Text or call if redness, swelling, pain or heat is increasing instead of improving, or if you notice blisters, pus, spreading redness, a fever, or a new concerning skin change. Send a clear photo in good lighting so we can guide you. If you have severe symptoms or feel acutely unwell, seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for a text response.
